The Story Behind “The Grim”

In 2020, New York Post columnist Maureen Callahan described Rochester as “grim and depressing.” We could’ve taken it personally — but that’s not who we are. Instead, we decided to have a little fun.

The following summer, we invited Maureen to Frontier Field for “Grim & Depressing Night” — a full-on celebration of Rochester pride, humor, and heart. She showed up, threw out the first pitch, and saw what this city is really about. By the end of the night, everyone — including Maureen — was laughing right alongside us.

Fans packed the stands wearing sold-out Grim & Depressing tees, turning what started as an insult into a badge of honor. The phrase that was meant to sting became a rallying cry — a reminder that Rochester’s grit, spirit, and sense of humor run deeper than any headline.
